The question I get asked more than almost any other when families start planning their Walt Disney World holiday from the UK is a simple one: which hotel should we stay in?

It sounds like an easy call to make. It isn't. Walt Disney World has more than 25 on-site resort hotels split across three tiers, Value, Moderate and Deluxe, and each one delivers a genuinely different holiday at a genuinely different price. Get this decision right and it shapes the whole feel of your trip. Get it wrong and you either overpay or end up with a resort that doesn't suit your family.

I'm Alex Perry, an independent Disney holiday specialist and the only travel agent in the UK to have graduated from Disney University. I've stayed at Disney World resort hotels across every tier, more than once each. Here's the honest version.

Why staying on-site matters, before we even get to tiers

Whichever tier you choose, staying at any Disney resort hotel comes with advantages you simply don't get off-site.

The biggest one is Early Theme Park Entry. Every Disney resort guest gets into all four parks up to 30 minutes ahead of the general public. On a busy day, that's the difference between walking straight onto the headline attractions and joining a queue that's already an hour or more long. Over a 10 to 14 night holiday, that early access adds up to hours of extra experience.

Then there's Disney's free transport network, buses, monorail, boats and the Skyliner gondola, linking every resort to every park and to Disney Springs. No hire car, no hunting for parking after a long day.

And there's the simple fact that you're inside the Disney world the moment you check in. Every resort is themed, every cast member is Disney trained, and the holiday doesn't stop at the park gates.

Value Resorts, the smart pick for budget-conscious families

Value is Disney's most affordable on-site tier, and it's a lot better than "budget" implies. These are large, boldly themed hotels that give you the full on-site experience without the higher price tag.

There are five Value resort hotels: All-Star Movies, All-Star Music, All-Star Sports, Art of Animation and Pop Century. Each has theming that goes well beyond a bit of wall art. At Art of Animation, entire buildings are sculpted into characters from The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. Pop Century dedicates each section to a different decade, complete with giant oversized props built right into the architecture.

What you give up for the lower rate is room size and some of the polish of the higher tiers. Value rooms run small, which can feel cramped for bigger families.

Art of Animation is the exception. It offers family suites alongside standard rooms, sleeping up to six with a kitchenette included, genuinely handy when you've got young kids needing snacks or early meals outside restaurant hours.

Who Value suits: families with older kids or teens who'll spend most of their time in the parks and want a comfortable, themed base without paying for a resort experience they won't use much. Also a good fit for shorter trips where the hotel is a lower priority.

Within this tier, Art of Animation gets my strongest recommendation, especially for families with young children who'll actually notice and enjoy the theming.

Moderate Resorts, the sweet spot for most UK families

If I had to pick the tier that suits the widest range of first-time UK visitors, it's Moderate. You get more space, more atmosphere, better pools and a more polished resort experience than Value, while the price stays realistic for most budgets.

There are four Moderate resort hotels: Caribbean Beach Resort, Coronado Springs Resort, Port Orleans French Quarter and Port Orleans Riverside.

Port Orleans Riverside is the one I recommend most to first-time UK families. The theming, recreating the antebellum American South with winding waterways and lush grounds, is beautiful, and the resort has real atmosphere throughout. The pools are excellent, and the optional Royal Guest Rooms, themed around the Disney Princesses, are a hit with young children who love those stories.

Caribbean Beach Resort is spacious and well positioned, sitting right on the Skyliner gondola route so you can glide to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios rather than take a bus. The central lagoon looks stunning at night.

Coronado Springs stands apart from the other three. It has a conference centre attached, which gives it a slightly more corporate edge, but the 2019 addition of Gran Destino Tower changed things. Its rooms offer views that rival the Deluxe tier, at Moderate prices. If you want a taste of Deluxe without the Deluxe bill, this is worth a serious look.

Port Orleans French Quarter is smaller and more compact than Riverside. It's charming, but between the two Port Orleans resorts I still lean toward Riverside for the extra space, the princess rooms and the bigger pool.

Who Moderate suits: most first-time UK families, especially those with young children who want a beautiful resort setting rather than just somewhere to sleep.

[H2] Deluxe Resorts, the full Disney experience, at a price

Deluxe is Disney at its most immersive and its most expensive. The theming is often extraordinary, the locations more convenient, the dining a step up, and the whole atmosphere noticeably different from the lower tiers.

There are nine Deluxe resort hotels, each with its own personality.

Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is Disney's flagship, a Victorian style resort right on the Seven Seas Lagoon with Magic Kingdom's castle visible across the water. It's on the monorail loop and just a short walk or boat ride from the park. For families where Magic Kingdom is the emotional centre of the trip, nothing else quite matches it.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is my most frequent recommendation when budget allows. The main lobby overlooks a real African savanna with live giraffes, zebras and flamingos, and many rooms have balconies looking straight onto them. Waking your kids up to giraffes outside the window isn't something they'll forget. The restaurants, Jiko and Boma especially, rank among the best dining anywhere at Walt Disney World.

Beach Club and Yacht Club sit side by side near EPCOT and Hollywood Studios and share access to Stormalong Bay, widely considered the best pool complex on Disney property, complete with a sand bottomed pool, lazy river and waterslide. For families prioritising EPCOT and Hollywood Studios who also want a standout pool, these are hard to beat.

Contemporary Resort has a claim no other hotel can make: the monorail runs straight through the building. Step off the elevator, onto the monorail, and you're at Magic Kingdom in minutes, or walk the dedicated path in about 15. For families centred on Magic Kingdom with young kids who need quick trips back for rest, that location is unmatched.

Who Deluxe suits: families for whom the resort itself matters as much as the parks, or those with a specific priority, Magic Kingdom proximity, the savanna view, or the EPCOT resorts, that only Deluxe can deliver.

How to choose the right tier for your family

When I'm recommending a resort, I weigh up four things.

Budget. Be honest about what you actually want to spend on accommodation. The on-site perks are identical across every tier, so there's no need to stretch for Deluxe if it means cutting into your park budget.

Family makeup. Young children who'll spend real time at the resort between park visits benefit from strong pools and theming. Teenagers who'll be out from opening to close get less value from the resort itself.

Park priorities. Whichever park excites you most should steer your choice. Magic Kingdom points to the monorail loop resorts, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios point to the resorts near them, and if you're splitting time evenly, transport access matters more than proximity to any one park.

Atmosphere versus value. Some families want the resort to be a destination in itself. Others just want a comfortable themed base. Both are completely valid, and the right answer changes which tier fits.
