For UK families this destination represents something genuinely extraordinary, a holiday where the parks themselves are the destination, and where the planning decisions you make before you travel determine how much of it you actually experience.

Walt Disney World Resort... the heart of any Orlando holiday
Walt Disney World Resort is the most visited theme park resort in the world and for most UK families it is the centrepiece of an Orlando holiday. Four theme parks, two water parks, more than 25 resort hotels, and a level of immersive experience that simply does not exist anywhere else.
The Theme Parks
Walt Disney World is home to four uniquely themed parks, each with its own charm and attractions:
- Magic Kingdom: The iconic park. Cinderella Castle, classic Disney characters, and the experiences that define what most families imagine when they think of Walt Disney World. The emotional heart of every first visit.
- EPCOT: Transformed in recent years. Guardians of the Galaxy, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, and the World Showcase a lagoon ringed by pavilions from 11 countries. A full day in its own right.
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, Toy Story Land, the Tower of Terror. The park for older children and teenagers. Lightning Lane strategy matters most here.
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Avatar Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris with real animals, and a scale that surprises first-time visitors. A genuine full day.

Universal Orlando Resort, is it worth adding?
Universal Orlando Resort is genuinely exceptional and for many families particularly those with older children and teenagers who are Harry Potter fans, Marvel fans, or thrill seekers it is the highlight of the trip.
Universal currently operates two parks: Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. The two parks are connected by CityWalk, an entertainment complex. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter spans both parks and for many families it is the single most anticipated experience of the whole Orlando holiday.
My honest take on combining Disney and Universal
For a 10-night Orlando holiday, most families can do both comfortably. I typically recommend two to three days at Universal and the remaining days at Walt Disney World. The combination gives you the full breadth of what Orlando offers without feeling rushed at either resort.
For families where the children are young under seven especially Walt Disney World should take priority. Universal has fewer experiences suited to very young children and the parks are structured differently to Disney. One day at Universal is enough for most younger families.
For families with older children who are specifically visiting for Universal, I recommend building your holiday around Universal first and treating Disney as the secondary destination.

Best time to visit Orlando from the UK

January and early February
quietest, cheapest, and most comfortable weather. Ideal if you have term-time flexibility.
Late April and early May
post-Easter crowds drop. Good value flights. Warm but manageable weather.
September and early October
American school summers end in late August. Sharp crowd drop. Lower resort prices. Florida rainy season still active but storms are typically brief.
Summer school holidays
busiest and most expensive. Fully operational and magical but requires more planning, more Lightning Lane strategy, and realistic expectations about queue times.
Alex's tips for an Orlando holiday from the UK
Give yourself enough time. A week in Orlando is not enough if you want to cover Disney World properly. For a combined Disney and Universal holiday I recommend a minimum of 12 nights. 14 nights is ideal.
Sort your park strategy before you travel. Orlando parks are busy. Knowing which parks to visit on which days based on your specific travel dates, which attractions to prioritise on Lightning Lane, and how to structure your mornings and afternoons makes a genuine difference to how much your family gets done.
Book dining 60 days out. The most popular Walt Disney World restaurants sell out within hours of the reservation window opening. I manage this for every client as part of the planning service.
Do not try to do everything. Every family comes back from Orlando with a list of things they wish they had done. That is part of the magic. Focus on what matters most to your family rather than trying to tick every box. A holiday that felt relaxed and joyful is better than one that felt like a race.

What are the best theme parks in Orlando for families?
Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are the two main destinations for UK families. Within Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom is the essential park for families with young children. Hollywood Studios is the priority for older children and teenagers. Universal's Islands of Adventure and its Wizarding World of Harry Potter are genuinely exceptional. SeaWorld and LEGOLAND Florida are worth considering as additional days for families with the time.
How long should I spend in Orlando from the UK?
A minimum of 10 nights for a Disney-only holiday. 12 to 14 nights for a combined Disney and Universal holiday. A week is possible but you will feel the time pressure across the parks.
Should I do Disney and Universal in the same Orlando holiday?
For most families, yes. Two to three days at Universal alongside seven to ten days at Walt Disney World gives you the best of what Orlando offers. For families with very young children, prioritising Disney and treating Universal as optional is the better approach.
